Jim, I've only owned my flooring business for less than two years now and I just paid it off. The most valuable thing I've learned was surprising to me, but maybe not to you.  You attract a certain kind of fish based on the bait you use. By setting ourselves apart and not making price the bait to attract customers, we've seen a positive change in our clientele and are consistently getting 40%+ margins.  Contrast that to the largest dealer in town (doing 3-4 times the amount of business we are) who I've heard through the grapevine is on credit hold with half his suppliers because he's the king of the cheap price rat race.
